INSURANCE FACTS

If you are injured in a car accident or if you are injured because of a negligent condition on property, there’s a good chance insurance may be available if it can be proven that someone was negligent in causing your injury.

I’VE BEEN INJURED, CAN YOU HELP ME?

The most difficult challenge facing people who are injured in a car collision is insurance company greed. If you are injured in a car accident or if you are injured because of a negligent condition on property, there’s a good chance insurance may be available if it can be proven that someone was negligent in causing your injury. Insurance companies have tried to win your trust with talking animals, bold logos telling you what good hands you will be in when you have their insurance or a variety of other clever marketing techniques. The fundamental thing to understand about insurance companies is that their first priority is to make money for their shareholders. Thus, the less insurance companies pay out for claims, the more money they get to keep for their shareholders. Insurance companies vary somewhat in how they handle auto accident injury claims but one thing is true about all insurance companies: they will initially attempt to get you to accept less than your case is worth. Insurance companies are also aware that sometimes it takes hours or even days after someone is hurt before the injury is fully appreciated by the accident victim. In incidents involving serious injuries it can take months or even years before injuries are healed to a point as good as they will get.

Insurance companies – whether you are dealing with your own insurance or the insurance for someone who injures you – employ thousands of skilled “adjusters” who know how to pay the least amount possible to resolve a claim quickly. Insurance adjusters often call to speak with an injured person within hours or a couple days after an accident. Insurance company adjusters will often offer money to resolve an in injury well before the extent of the injury is known or before injuries have healed.

Talking to the Insurance Company for the Responsible Party

Before you talk to an adjuster for the responsible driver, remember that the other driver’s insurance company is not there to protect you. If it can blame you for the accident, or argue that you have not been hurt very badly, it will. If it learns that you are in a bad financial position because of the accident, it may try to get you to settle for a small sum of money right now. Remember that you have rights. Once you sign a Release of your injury claim, however, you have no more rights. You cannot obtain any more compensation for your injuries. Be careful. Speak with an attorney if you are unsure of what to do.

Everyone in Wyoming is required to have a minimum of $25,000 in automobile liability insurance in order to license their vehicle. “Liability” insurance is the type of insurance that provides coverage in the event there is an accident for which the driver is at fault. Liability insurance can pay for damages such as damages to property including your car, motorcycle, or home. Liability insurance is also the type of insurance that is available to pay for personal injuries such as medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Health care costs keep increasing and the costs of living keeps increasing. $25,000 is very often an insufficient amount of insurance for many types of injuries.
